Sound on for fascinating bat facts and gasps of ‘ooh and another one’!

Another fantastic bat walk lead by @norfolknorwichbatgroup. Thank you to Susie and Mary for leading it and providing so much commentary about bat behaviour and the different species.

They think there were 8 different species found this time! As well as pipistrelle, soprano pipistrelle, noctule, barbastelle, Natterer’s and Daubenton’s which were found last year, we had brown long-eared bat, and pretty sure there was a Nathusius’ pipistrelle.

Fingers crossed for the Nathusius’ pipistrelle, as it’s a rare bat in the UK and migrates to/from mainland Europe.

What a great festival Groundswell always is. Our b What a great festival Groundswell always is. Our brains are full, connections made and renewed, to do lists bulging.

Thanks to the @soilassociation for their agroforestry advice, and for having me on the Whole Farm Tree Plan panel. 🌳

For me, there was lots about Natural Capital, and discussion on how to deal with limiting factors on farms. We all got inspiration on introducing livestock to an arable farm, including the reality of mobile hen huts from fellow Norfolk farmer David Cross @gloversfarm 🐓

We had a brief drink with our Norfolk Women That Farm group. Met lots of other Nature Friendly Farming Network champions, and overall it was a great chance to introduce our new farm manager Richard (who to be honest already knew everyone!). 🧑‍🌾👩‍🌾

Great food and music throughout the festival, including from @wildfarmed Andy Cato. There was even poetry about farmers from @thegaiafoundation. Anything we missed was captured in a great round up session on day two, feeding the awesome illustrators @sketchnotesuk 🎨

Brilliant to share the experience with Fiona’s daughters Francesca and Leyre, getting a taste for the world of regenerative agriculture - dung beetle safari and all 🪲

There might have been a little earwig issue in the glamping tents… but we made it through the night! ⛺️

Open Farm Sunday! Yes, rewind 6 weeks… we welcom Open Farm Sunday! Yes, rewind 6 weeks… we welcomed a whopping 250 of you to the farm! Thank you for coming!

People came from all over Norfolk to visit us, day tripping from the Norwich area, rounding off half term with a little farm visit or those from further afield popping over from @deepdalecamping

Fiona and I always enjoy leading the walk, answering so many varied questions. Don’t her pants look good 🩲😉

Thank you to all our brilliant supporters - @norfolknorwichbatgroup @norfolkriverstrust Richard and his woodworking, Dominic with his bees and honey, the Lamsdells with a bird ringing session and information stand, and of course Celia and Sue with their beautiful horses, Bessie and Summer.

This year we also had more information about our grain including oats from @whitesoats and flour from @gilchesters

Most of all thanks to our fantastic team who made the day happen with signs, tables, farm yard prep, health & safety to name a fraction of the to do list! Stephen on the combine, Estelle on owl pellets and Mum on refreshments. Also our brand new (not even started the position at this point) Farm Manager, Richard, who just got stuck in. And our daughters helping with all sorts.

We even got a visit from @openfarmsunday Annabel Shackleton, so watch out for us on the official OFS video.

Additionally, thanks to all the people on social media, Norfolk events emails and press who spread the word - it really helped bring more people onto the farm, many for the first time.

We’re sure everyone who visited learnt a little more about British farming and how we manage our farm to both grow food and benefit biodiversity. That’s our aim, so please come and visit again next year.

Barn owl update It’s that time of year when Co Barn owl update

It’s that time of year when Colin comes to check our owl boxes.

Just one little chick, possibly a female but too early to tell. Here it is nestled up with its mother.

Colin explained that this year hasn’t been a good year for barn owls in a number of places, partly due to the cyclical nature of the vole population - one of they key components of a barn owl diet.

Obviously disappointing on the breeding front but we still regularly see adults hunting all over the farm, so let’s hope 2026 is a better year.

The nestboxes were provided with funding support from the Water Management Alliance, as part of the Norfolk Rivers Internal Drainage Board project.

The boxes at Deepdale are monitored by Colin under his Natural England /BTO Schedule 1 Disturbance Licence.
