Rain, or lack of… Don’t let the dark clouds fo Rain, or lack of…
Don’t let the dark clouds fool you. They resulted in a few drops yesterday and 4mm overnight.

Rainfall totals:
March: 11mm
April: 22mm (17mm of this was on 15th, over 3 weeks ago)

We are lucky to have irrigation as an option but it’s time consuming and labour intensive. It would be so much easier if it fell from the sky for free, but no rain in the forecast at all.

We have the bare minimum of irrigation kit now, as post root crops we sold most of it as we didn’t expect cereal crops to require it. But 3 out of 4 years now, we’ve used it.
Who wants to visit the farm? We are hosting our Who wants to visit the farm?

Whole Farm Tree Plan Trees, trees, trees… woodl Whole Farm Tree Plan

Trees, trees, trees… woodland, hedgerows, scrub and hedgerow trees. Newly planted, veteran, coppiced and those still on paper.

We were fortunate to be part of the @soilassociation pilot scheme for their Whole Farm Tree Plan project. On Wednesday evening you can hear me, Anna, discuss Deepdale’s involvement as well that of an upland livestock farmer from Northumberland. The webinar runs 6-7.30pm and the Soil Association team will explain the concept as well as the method of creating a functional treescape assessment.

Sign up via the Eventbrite link in our bio. There will also be a recording of you can’t make it in person.

Experimentation! For the first time this year we Experimentation!

For the first time this year we are drilling one plot with a bicrop of oats and peas.

This means the seed is mixed in the drill so there is no specific spacing of the different plants.

Not only does this increase plant diversity in the field, but the peas, which are legumes will fix nitrogen in the soil, therefore aiding the growth of the oats.

Let’s see how it goes!
Our spring crops are going in! Spring wheat is fin Our spring crops are going in!
Spring wheat is finished.
Spring oats are being drilled as we speak.

Stephen has been ploughing the fields to turn in the cover crop or previous clover ley. Michael has followed with a power harrow to create a level seed bed, then drilling.

Here you can see the beetle bank between our two plots on one field, which helps with integrated pest management.

A little bit of rain next week, to help germination, would be ideal. It has been very, very dry recently.

The Soil exhibition @somersethouse is well worth a The Soil exhibition @somersethouse is well worth a visit. While soil has become an almost daily conversation on the farm, it was clear most of the visitors around me hadn’t really considered it before.

Some farmers have become obsessive about the soil that only a few years ago they didn’t really consider. And now @thelandgardeners have brought it to life for the wider public.

I loved the photography, creating other-worldly images. The tiny clay pinch pots, labelled with the clay’s collection location. The Palestinian wildflower film from the 1970s was particularly poignant, the abundant yellow fennel towering about peoples’ heads, the land so full of life, such a contrast to the images we see on the news. And once the conflict is over, those seeds will remain, dormant in the soil, until the conditions are right for them to spring to life again. And the final display, a mud kitchen, surely the first interaction with soil that so many of us have.

Go if you can, it’s on until mid April. Thank you @floriafloraldesign for accompanying me.
