Rural crafter Richard Rood runs our green woodworking courses at Deepdale Farm. You may have seen Richard in a Pop Up Shop at Dalegate Market, or demonstrating at our Open Farm Sunday events.

The ever-patient and encouraging Richard will teach you to work with green wood, enabling you to create beautiful items for your home. At the moment we are offering a one-day course which is an introduction to green woodworking. In addition, as an extension to this, a two-day course “stool making for beginners”. We hope to expand the range of green woodworking courses, so if you are interested in making your own pole lathe or other items, please get in touch and we will see what we can arrange.

Introduction to Green Woodworking Course – 1 Day

This is a 1-day green woodworking course introducing you to this rural craft.

– Learn about the properties and handling of green wood
– Get familiar with tools, including the draw knife and the pole lathe
– Create a selection of objects before taking them home to show off

All tools are supplied by the instructor.
Please wear clothing suitable to work under cover but outdoors, ie multiple layers.
Please bring a packed lunch to enjoy in the barn or courtyard. Meanwhile we’ll supply hot drinks throughout the day.

Maximum four attendees. Venue well ventilated.

This course does not include accommodation. We recommend staying at Deepdale Camping & Rooms, which offer excellent self-catering rooms and camping for tents, campervans and motorhomes.

The course and venue are not suitable for participants to bring their dogs or other pets.

Stool Making for Beginners Course – 2 Days

Create a beautiful piece of handmade furniture over two days. By building on the beginner’s techniques learnt in the one-day Introduction to Green Woodworking course, you can craft a bespoke item of furniture for your home.

Please ensure you have already completed, or are booked to attend the introductory course before taking part in this one.

Because of the drying time needed for the stool legs, the two-day course is split over different weekends. We prefer the stool legs to dry naturally, without the use of a kiln. Please select and book your Day 1 of the course, this will then automatically book you onto the Day 2 session.

The course includes:
– A refresher on the properties and handling of green wood
– Getting familiar with green woodworking tools including a pole lathe and draw knife
– Creating your own stool using a mix of green wood and hardwood, which you can then take home to be admired and used by friends and family

Day 1 – create the legs for your stool
Day 2 – create the seat and assemble the stool

All tools are supplied by the instructor.
Please wear clothing suitable to work undercover but outdoors.
Please bring a packed lunch to enjoy in the barn or courtyard. Hot drinks will be provided throughout the day.

Maximum four attendees. Venue well ventilated.

This course does not include accommodation. We would recommend staying at Deepdale Camping & Rooms, which offer excellent self-catering rooms and camping for tents, campervans and motorhomes.

The course and venue are not suitable for participants to bring their dogs or other pets.

Gift certificates

If you would like to gift a course, but aren’t sure on the recipient’s availability, then why not purchase a gift certificate. They are available in multiples of £55 and valid for 12 months from date of purchase.

Private group tuition

We can organise a private group if you have 3 or 4 people who would like to attend. This can be arranged at a weekend or mid-week, but subject to Richard’s availability. Please email us with some suggested dates if you are interested in this option. Use it as a corporate day out, a family activity or a friends reunion.
